Real-Time Probing of Electron Dynamics Using Attosecond Time-Resolved Spectroscopy.

چکیده
Attosecond science has paved the way for direct probing of electron dynamics in gases and solids. This review provides an overview of recent attosecond measurements, focusing on the wealth of knowledge obtained by the application of isolated attosecond pulses in studying dynamics in gases and solid-state systems. Attosecond photoelectron and photoion measurements in atoms reveal strong-field tunneling ionization and a delay in the photoemission from different electronic states. These measurements applied to molecules have shed light on ultrafast intramolecular charge migration. Similar approaches are used to understand photoemission processes from core and delocalized electronic states in metal surfaces. Attosecond transient absorption spectroscopy is used to follow the real-time motion of valence electrons and to measure the lifetimes of autoionizing channels in atoms. In solids, it provides the first measurements of bulk electron dynamics, revealing important phenomena such as the timescales governing the switching from an insulator to a metallic state and carrier-carrier interactions.

Probing electronic dynamics during photochemical reactions.
This review discusses a new method for probing the evolution of the valence-electron structure of molecules during chemical reactions. The method relies on the interaction of an intense infrared laser pulse with molecules that results in the emission of attosecond pulses (1 as = 10(-18) s) in a process known as high-harmonic generation. Time-resolved high-harmonic spectroscopy measures the phas...

Motion in the microcosm unfolds via the formation of wavepackets, resulting from a coherent superposition of quantum states. Pioneered by A. H. Zewail, nuclear motion in (bio-)molecules as well as the formation and rupture of chemical bonds have been accessed extensively by femtosecond (1 fs = 10 seconds) pump-probe spectroscopy. For these outstanding experiments, A. H. Zewail was awarded the N...
متن کاملAttosecond light pulses for probing two-electron dynamics of helium in the time domain.
Using attosecond light pulses to doubly ionize a two-electron wave packet of helium, we showed that the time-resolved correlated motion of the two electrons can be probed by measuring their six-dimensional momentum distributions. For simple wave packets, we showed that the measured momenta, when analyzed in appropriate coordinates, can reveal the stretching, the rotational, and the bending vibr...

From 1964, when mode-locking was discovered, until 2001, when the fi rst sub-femtosecond (that is, attosecond) pulses were produced1,2, laser pulse durations decreased by about three orders of magnitude (Fig. 1). Advances came through constantly refi ning known concepts of dispersion control and Kerr nonlinearities, aided by improved laser materials. Although a laser scientist from 1965 would h...
